Projects

Home Lab Network Build

I built an enterprise home network lab for tinkering. The property is small and only needs 2 access points. I had the ISP provider install a broadband connection at 1200mbs DL and 100mbs UP. I put the provided router into bridge mode and then connected it to a Unifi UDM Pro. This then feeds by a 10gb backbone to a 16 port POE Switch. The switch then feeds 1 camera, 4 access points, 2 smaller POE-powered switches. One of the access points is a WiFi 6. This was total overkill but allowed testing of the throughput and capabilities of the WiFi 6. The setup included multiple Vlans for MGMT, Guest, IOT, and main users. This was further extended with my brother’s Unifi Homelab which can connect using a tunnel. A revision to the networks has taken place, and a dedicated VLAN as a VPN from Malta to thte UK. This has a dedicated WiFi channel and a direct connection to a single port on the TV Switch.

Upgrade a Local Gym Network

My local gym is upgrading the IT and I offered to assist. The original setup was the ISP provider router with WiFi covering a 600sqm2 gym spread over 2 floors. This was less than ideal, but the owner reported that the fast internet was slow and connectivity poor. Also within the structure was a standalone CCTV system. We agreed on a budget and scope of work. I contacted the ISP provider for PPPoE settings. Installed the new Unifi hardware including access points, cameras and Cat 6 cabling. The network was configured with Vlans to separate the management, guest, employee, IOT and cameras. The Guest network was given restrictions and isolation. Once the network was ready, the PPPoE setting was applied.

Twenty66 - Startup compnay needing a SOHO setup

A good friend was starting up his own company and asked me to get assistance in getting him some of the basis for the office. There were going to be about 3-4 staff needing a WiFi connection, and NAS storage solution. I looked at using Unifi as an all-in-one solution. The staff would also need asses while away from the office. The ISP provider router was put into bridge mode and the Unifi Router and switch was installed. The router came with a WiFi 6 Access point which covered the office area comfortably. The NAS was installed for the local network. Firewall settings were activated to allow remote access to the NAS while away from the office as well as remote support for the Unifi equipment.

AWS Lab

I wanted to extend my knowledge of cloud solutions. I spent about 6 months using AWS with the help of a friend. I set myself simple tasks and followed tutorials online. Spinning up an EC2 computer. Connecting to it remotely. Using instances of Windows and Ubuntu. Installing Web Servers and hosting a WordPress site. I also explored the storage solutions with S3 buckets as a standalone and completed the AWS Lab. I also looked at Elastic computing to have a greater understanding of how this can move with a clients needs.
